Israel’s seizure of Gaza aid flotilla off coast of Greece condemned as ‘act of piracy’ as 175 people detained

  • Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters near the southern Greek island of Crete overnight Wednesday into Thursday, detaining crews.
  • The flotilla, which set sail from Barcelona, aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and highlight the living conditions of Palestinians under the ongoing blockade.
  • Organisers reported over 70 boats and 1,000 participants were involved, with Israel's Foreign Ministry saying that about 175 activists from over 20 boats were being taken to Israel.
  • Turkey's foreign ministry condemned the seizure as an “act of piracy” and a violation of international law, while activists in Greece planned protest rallies.
  • The incident follows a similar thwarted attempt in 2025 and occurs amidst a fragile ceasefire in Gaza, where residents continue to face severe shortages due to the blockade enforced since 2007.
