Amidst warnings published in Tel Aviv about neglecting Israeli-Egyptian ties after the peace deal with the UAE, the new Israeli ambassador to Egypt Amira Oron announced that Egypt’s position is preserved thanks to its leadership in the peace process with Israel.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi received the credentials of the new Israeli ambassador on Wednesday, with her being the 14th ambassador of Israel to Egypt.

Oron stressed the importance of peace with UAE, Bahrain, and other Arab states but saying that nothing could substitute peace with Egypt. During her meeting with the Egyptian president, she spoke with him about her Egyptian roots from her father’s side.

The veteran diplomat was first selected by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the ambassadorship in 2018, but she was not approved by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who knew that she was criticizing his policy saying that he missed the chance to hold peace with Arabs and Palestinians.

However, Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi congratulated Oron, hailing a competent and highly skilled diplomat. Ashkenazi stated he was sure that Oron would effectively promote bilateral relations.

For her part, she tweeted in Arabic to express her delight for her return to Egypt as an ambassador who carries a message of peace and good neighborhood.

Oron has been working at the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1991 and had occupied several posts throughout her 29-year diplomatic career.
