Israel recorded its highest daily number of COVID-19 cases in six months, according to the Health Ministry.

The ministry said Israel reported 6,275 new coronavirus cases on Monday, marking the highest daily figure since early February.

The number of critically ill patients is approaching 400, the German news agency (dpa) said.

It said 58 percent of the estimated 9.4 million Israelis are fully immunized.

The Health Ministry recently released figures showing that the efficacy of the Biontech/Pfizer vaccine used in Israel has declined sharply since early June.

According to the ministry, vaccination prevents only 39% of coronavirus infections and 91% of serious illnesses.

Last month, Israel announced it will begin offering a third shot of the Pfizer vaccine to people over 60, in an effort to slow the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant, while Health Ministry officials did not rule out the need to impose a new lockdown.

Meanwhile in the West Bank, the Palestinian government was studying the possibility of offering unpaid leave to employees refusing to receive the vaccine, until the pandemic is over.

Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh said during a weekly cabinet meeting in Ramallah that his government is expected to take measures against people who refuse to take the vaccine.
