Israel said Sunday it kicked off the construction of underground network to place sensors along the borders with Lebanon that could detect possible cross-border
tunnel building.
The comes almost a year after the Israeli military said it had destroyed a series of infiltration tunnels dug by the Lebanese Hezbollah.
"All the drilling is being done on the Israeli side of the blue line," military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Jonathan Conricus, referring to the border demarcation with Lebanon, Reuters reported.
He noted that the planned network was not a wall, but rather a seismic and acoustic sensors buried in the ground.
UN peacekeepers in south Lebanon learned from the Israeli side about the plan.
Conricus said deployment of the network was beginning on Sunday and drilling could go on for up to two months.
“What we are doing today is part of a larger plan,” he noted, according to the Associated Press.
“We understand that our activity may be seen and will be heard on the other side and we want to explain what we are we doing and why we are doing it. It is a matter of precaution.”
Israel recently warned that Hezbollah had beefed up its presence along the volatile frontier.
