Israel-Gaza latest: Netanyahu warns Palestinians ‘leave now’ before ‘hurricane’ strikes as six killed in Jerusalem

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned residents of Gaza City to leave straight away, as Israel said it would ramp up air strikes on the territory hours after six people were shot dead in Jerusalem.

“I say to the residents of Gaza, I take this opportunity and listen to me carefully: you have been warned – leave now,” he said at the Air Force Command Centre in Tel Aviv, adding that Israeli forces were organising and assembling in the heart of the war-torn strip for a ground “manoeuvre”.

Israeli defence minister Israel Katz warned on social media earlier that “a powerful hurricane will strike the skies of Gaza City” after the IDF struck numerous high-rises over the past few days.

Two Palestinian gunmen opened fire at a bus stop on the outskirts of Jerusalem, killing six people, in what police described as "a terrorist attack", one of the deadliest in the city in recent years.

Hamas called it “a natural response to the occupation’s crimes”, but did not admit the murders. Mr Netanyahu vowed to “catch everyone” who aided the gunmen.

Trump issues 'last warning' to Hamas

07:35 , Alisha Rahaman Sarkar

Donald Trump said he was giving his "last warning" to Hamas regarding a possible ceasefire.

Arab officials described a new US proposal for the immediate release of all the remaining hostages in exchange for 3,000 Palestinian prisoners and a temporary ceasefire.

A senior Hamas official called it a "humiliating surrender document," but the militant group said it would keep negotiating.

“The Israelis have accepted my terms. It is time for Hamas to accept as well. I have warned Hamas about the consequences of not accepting. This is my last warning,” the US president said on social media.

Earlier in March, Mr Trump issued a similar warning to Hamas after meeting eight freed hostages at the White House.

Israel minister confirms Tel Aviv accepted US ceasefire proposal

Israeli foreign minister Gideon Saar told reporters in Hungary that Israel has accepted the latest US ceasefire proposal and expressed hope it would succeed.

Arab officials described a new US proposal for the immediate release of all the remaining hostages in exchange for 3,000 Palestinian prisoners and a temporary ceasefire.

An Egyptian official said the new proposal was broader than previous ones and would require negotiations over ending the war, the withdrawal of Israeli forces and Israel's demand that Hamas disarm, according to the Associated Press.

Bassem Naim, a senior Hamas official, said the proposal seemed designed to be rejected because it calls for the release of all hostages on the first day, and for Hamas to disarm, and it conditions the withdrawal of Israeli forces on the establishment of a government in Gaza acceptable to Israel.

He said Hamas and allied groups seek an agreement that will "end the war, halt the genocide, and open the horizon for a political solution that achieves our legitimate national goals, but not by signing a humiliating surrender document".

Israeli military issues new evacuation order

The Israeli military this morning issued another evacuation order for residents in Gaza City ahead of a new offensive to seize the enclave's largest urban centre, part of a planned takeover stirring international alarm over the fate of the entire territory.

Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday warned residents of Gaza City to leave straight away after six people were shot dead in Jerusalem.

Gaza-bound flotilla says boat struck by drone in Tunisian waters

05:18 , Alisha Rahaman Sarkar

The Global Sumud Flotilla for Gaza said this morning that one of its main boats was struck by a drone in Tunisian waters, though all six passengers and crew are safe.

Tunisian authorities said the explosion originated inside the vessel, and Tunisia's National Guard spokesperson told Mosaique FM radio that reports of a drone attack on the flotilla "have no basis in truth".

The Portuguese-flagged boat, carrying the flotilla's steering committee, sustained fire damage to its main deck and below-deck storage, the GSF said in a statement.

The flotilla is an international initiative seeking to deliver humanitarian aid to war-torn Gaza via civilian boats supported by delegations from 44 countries, including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and Portuguese left-wing politician Mariana Mortagua.

Red Cross says Gazans need more tents as a million face displacement

Monday 8 September 2025 23:59 , Jane Dalton

The Red Cross says it has distributed over 300 tents to displacement camps in southern Gaza in recent days but warned that the current supply of shelter materials falls far short of urgent needs.

More than 1,500 are expected to be delivered in coming days, the Red Cross added, but said hundreds of thousands of people desperately need new tents or tarpaulins after months of wear and tear on existing supplies.

The International Organization for Migration told Reuters it still had about 35,000 tents as well as half a million tarpaulins waiting in Jordan pending customs clearance.

"It's frustrating. We need political solutions and then you can remove things like customs clearance and then we can move quicker," said Karl Baker, Regional Crisis Coordinator and head of IOM Gaza Response.

Israel strikes in vicinity of three Syrian cities, Syrian media say

Monday 8 September 2025 23:52 , Bryony Gooch

Israel struck in the vicinity of Syria's central Homs city, the coastal city of Latakia, and the historic city of Palmyra, Syrian state-affiliated media said on Monday.

There was no immediate comment from Israel.

Syria's Foreign Ministry condemned the Israeli airstrikes as "a blatant infringement" of its sovereignty and regional stability, saying in a statement on Tuesday they were part of an ongoing series of escalations pursued by Israel against Syrian territory.

Syrian media did not elaborate on the size or the impact of the reported strikes.

Israel has for years waged a campaign of aerial bombardment that destroyed much of the country's military infrastructure, and this has ramped up since the Israeli war in Gaza. Israel and Syria have recently engaged in U.S.-mediated talks on de-escalating the conflict in southern Syria.

Gunmen were 20 and 21, security chiefs say

Monday 8 September 2025 23:00 , Jane Dalton

Israel's Shin Bet internal security agency said the two gunmen in the Jerusalem attack that killed six people were 20- and 21-year-old Palestinians from the West Bank with no prior arrests.

Paramedics said broken glass covered the area, and people wounded lay unconscious on the road and a pavement.

President Mahmoud Abbas, head of the internationally recognised Palestinian Authority, condemned "any targeting of Palestinian and Israeli civilians", and denounced “all forms of violence and terrorism, regardless of their source", according to his office.

The Palestinian Authority, which administers parts of the West Bank and cooperates with Israel on security matters, has been largely sidelined since the start of the war.

Forcing thousands to flee Gaza morally unjustifiable, UK minister says

Monday 8 September 2025 21:27 , Jane Dalton

Forcing thousands of Palestinians to flee Gaza City in the face of a threatened takeover by Israeli forces has been branded "morally unjustifiable, wholly disproportionate and utterly counterproductive" by a UK foreign minister.

Baroness Chapman of Darlington told Parliament the mass displacement of civilians risked breaching international humanitarian law.

The Labour frontbencher also repeated the UK government's intention to recognise a Palestinian state later this month unless Israel moved to end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, agreed to a ceasefire and revived the prospect of a two-state solution.

Red Cross warns Gaza residents need more tents as a million face displacement

Monday 8 September 2025 19:00 , Bryony Gooch

The Red Cross said on Monday it has distributed over 300 tents to displacement camps in southern Gaza in recent days but warned that the current supply of shelter materials to the enclave falls far short of urgent needs on the ground.

In addition to the 300 tents, more than 1,500 are expected to be delivered in coming days, the Red Cross added, but said hundreds of thousands of people desperately need new tents or tarpaulins after months of wear and tear on existing supplies.

"Many displaced families are living in appalling conditions -- some among the rubble of their destroyed homes, others in makeshift tents constructed from tarpaulins and scrap metal," Sarah Davies, a spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross, told Reuters.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) told Reuters separately that humanitarian groups had sent "a limited number of tents" into Gaza in recent weeks, but many more were needed.

Over 1.3 million Gazans currently lack tents, according to the United Nations, and further displacement is anticipated as Israel conducts a major assault on Gaza City, where hundreds of thousands of residents are living among the ruins.

COGAT, the Israeli defence agency that deals with humanitarian issues, told Reuters that 5,000 tents had entered Gaza since restrictions on shelter materials were lifted near the end of August.

Netanyahu tells Gaza City residents 'get out of there'

Monday 8 September 2025 18:22 , Bryony Gooch

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned residents of Gaza to leave as Israel intensifies its attacks on Gaza City.

“This has been a difficult day in our war on terrorism. Two abhorrent terrorists came to a bus stop, shot at a bus and murdered six of our dear citizens. I send condolences to the families, and I also send best wishes for a speedy recovery to those who were wounded”, he said.

“That we eliminated these two terrorists is not enough. That we will go after their supporters and accomplices is also not enough.

“My directive is to forcefully go after the nests of terrorism. We have already eliminated the nests of terrorism in three refugee camps. We simply evacuated the population from there and flattened all terrorist infrastructure – and my directive is to do this in additional terrorist nests.

“I am here at the Air Force command center. A few days ago I promised you that we would bring down the terrorist high-rises in Gaza. This is exactly what we are doing. In the last two days, 50 such high-rises have fallen; the Air Force took them down.

“Now, all of this is only the introduction, only the beginning of the main intensive operation – the ground incursion of our forces, that are now getting organized and gathering, into Gaza City.

“Therefore, I am taking this opportunity to say to the residents of Gaza, listen to me carefully: You have been warned; Get out of there!”

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has issued a warning to Gaza residents as forces are preparing for a ground ‘maneuver’.

Netanyahu warned Gaza residents to leave now, according to Reuters, adding forces were organising and assembling into Gaza City.

For weeks, Israel’s military has been working its way into the heart of the war-torn strip in its latest offensive. Israel has destroyed multiple high-rise buildings in the city over the past several days, accusing Hamas of putting surveillance infrastructure in them.

It has ordered people to flee ahead of its ground offensive into the city of a million residents, which experts say is experiencing famine.
