Israel Folau: Australia coach Michael Cheika reveals he received threats after full-back's contract was terminated

Australia head coach MIchael Cheika has revealed that he received threats after Israel Folau‘s contract was terminated.

The 30-year-old had his contract terminated by Rugby Australia in April after posting that “hell awaits” gay people on social media.

Folau is now suing Rugby Australia, arguing his contract was ended unlawfully, and Cheika has received threats from fans in the wake of the incident.

“People were saying all sorts of stuff,” Cheika told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“Just threats I was getting; people on the street, some to my face, a couple at some games. It was just crazy stuff.”

The full-back won 73 caps for Australia and had been a key figure in Cheika’s plans for the Rugby World Cup.

Australia open their tournament against Fiji in Sapporo on 21 September.

“I’m not disappointed in the individual because if that’s what he believes, and that’s where his passion is, I will never tell someone to hide it,” Cheika commented when asked if he was disappointed with Folau’s actions.

“I might not agree with everyone, but I’d never want someone to not say what they feel. I’m no person to judge.

“The other disappointing part is that we lost one of our best players; a guy who I helped come back. I wouldn’t say I’m responsible for what’s happened. It’s just life. But I had to do what was needed for the team.”

Folau escaped punishment for similar comments last year.

He is seeking £5.6 million in compensation for what he perceives as unfair dismissal, as well as an apology and reinstatement to the national side.
