The Israeli army announced Sunday that it foiled an attempt to smuggle weapons and ammunition from Lebanon to Israel.
Israeli soldiers posted near the northern town of Metula noticed a suspicious person throwing a bag over the border fence between Israel and Lebanon, the military said.
A special patrol was dispatched to examine the bag, which contained 17 pistols, as well as other weapons and ammunition, according to the military spokesman.
The police and intelligence were assigned to investigate the smuggling and figure out its purpose. They presume criminal parties might be behind it as part of drugs and weapons smuggling operations in the region.
