US President Donald Trump has announced that Israel and Hamas have signed off on phase one of the US-led Gaza peace plan. According to the president, this means that all Israeli hostages will be released and that Israeli troops currently in Gaza will be withdrawn.
He made the announcement on Truth Social, saying: “this means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line as the first steps toward a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace. All Parties will be treated fairly!”

Qatar, one of several countries mediating between Israel and Hamas, confirmed the agreement on social media, with foreign ministry spokesperson Dr Majed Al Ansari saying details would be announced at a later date.
“An agreement was reached on all the provisions and implementation mechanisms of the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, which will lead to ending the war, the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, and the entry of aid,” he said.
According to a Palestinian source who spoke to the news agency Agence France-Presse, 20 living hostages will be released by Hamas on Saturday or Sunday local time.
This is the first stage of Trump’s 20-point peace plan, which has drawn scrutiny for lacking detail and “favouring Israel more than it does Hamas,” as per The Conversation.
The deal comes in the wake of the two-year anniversary of the October 7 attack, where Hamas-led attacks southern Israel saw 1,139 people die and about 240 people taken as captives into Gaza.
Two years of Israeli attacks on Gaza since then have killed at least 67,000 Palestinians, with the United Nations Commission finding that Israel is committing a genocide in the Gaza Strip.
