Isolating students applaud Liverpool foodbank volunteers for delivering thousands of pizzas to Manchester

A group of isolating students praised Fans Supporting Foodbanks volunteers from Liverpool for delivering thousands of pizzas to a Manchester university campus.

The delivery saw 3,000 pizzas delivered for the 1,700 students who are currently isolating at the halls of residence in Hulme due to coronavirus restrictions.

Dave Kelly, who travelled to Manchester with fellow Fans Supporting Foodbanks volunteer Robert Daniels, said they made the journey because it is a "tragic situation that the students find themselves in".

He added: "There are 1,700 students trapped without food in the Manchester Metropolitan University halls of residence. So we delivered humanitarian aid for them.

"There were 3,000 pizzas for the students in the accommodation that we delivered in pallets. We also dropped off other helpful bits and pieces such as hand santiser, face-masks, and fresh apple and orange juice."

A gathering of students that waited for the food drop off cheered and applauded as the foodbank van pulled up.

Dave added: "We got a cheer from the students which was very humbling. We could hear them talking on the other side of the fence and we heard them saying that we were football fans from Liverpool dropping pizzas off for them. They were quite surprised.

"They were very respectful and welcoming. It's not something a lot of them have experienced before because the stark reality is they are locked in there.

"They are self-isolating and they can't go out as they would be potentially breaking the law.

"So they are relying on us to deliver food. It's a tragic situation and we were glad we could help them out."

The Fans Supporting Foodbanks Merseyside volunteers have a good relationship with the fans groups at Manchester City FC Fans Foodbank Support and Manchester United Supporters Trust Foodbanks.
