Ismaila Sarr and Troy Deeney committed to Watford's promotion push, says Scott Duxbury

Watford chairman and CEO Scott Duxbury says Ismaila Sarr and Troy Deeney are committed to firing the club back to the Premier League after they ended up staying following the closure of the transfer window last week.

After Watford were relegated from the Premier League last season, Deeney and Sarr were constantly linked with moves this summer.

West Brom were chasing Deeney, while Liverpool and Manchester United were tracking Sarr and Crystal Palace even failed with a £25million deadline-day bid.

Both players ended up staying after the domestic transfer window shut last Friday and Duxbury insists they are committed to getting Watford out of the Championship.

“From the start I said this window was always about keeping what we had,” Duxbury told supporters at a virtual Q&A last night.

“Importantly there were certain financial issues we had to address with the transfer market, but it was also keeping players that wanted to be here, that wanted to be part of the fight.

“It is really encouraging that players like Troy, like Sarr, want to be here, they want to get the club promoted.

“Keeping players like that was always far more important than what players we could actually bring in.”
