A murder investigation has been launched after a woman died in a fire in north London.

Police were called on Saturday at 12.40pm to Mingard Walk, Islington, to reports of a blaze in a flat.

A woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Formal identification and a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

A man believed to be in his 30s was also found suffering serious injuries. He remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Residents were evacuated from the building as a precaution.

The fire is being treated as suspicious. No arrests have been made.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to the fire.

They said part of a maisonette on the second and third floor of a four-storey block was damaged by the fire.

Anyone with information should call the incident room number on 020 8345 3865 quoting Operation Rushville.
