Isles of Scilly punters hit pub in fancy dress for Tier 1 New Year celebrations

Isles of Scilly revellers rang in the New Year with gatherings of up to six indoors, fancy dress parties and trips to the pub.

The islands, 30 miles off the coast of Cornwall, are the only part of the country still under Tier One restrictions, enabling friends and family to meet indoors, while observing the rule of six.

Islanders took advantage of the opportunity on Thursday night to bid farewell to 2020 together in a "fun" and "civilised" pub environment - with a few fancy-dress outfits thrown in for good measure.

The Mermaid Inn, on the largest Scilly Isle, St Mary's, attracted a mostly younger crowd, with friends gathering in groups of six to raise a glass of Prosecco to the new year.

And other outfits seen in the pub included a group of friends who had dressed up as characters from the Netflix true-crime documentary Tiger King, released at the beginning of lockdown in March 2020.

Meanwhile, other revellers had gone fancy, donning long, elegant ball gowns to mark the occasion.

Mr Latham said: "We feel very lucky and very grateful to still be in Tier One. Sticking to the guidelines has obviously worked for us on the islands.

"Thankfully everyone has been really sensible, abiding by the rules and wearing face masks when they're not sat at their tables.

"All the locals are behaving, it went really well."

And elsewhere on St Mary's, micropub Jack's Bar drew a more "civilised" crowd, getting together for a "calm" drink or two to see out 2020.

Photographer Chris Hall, who was out and about on the island last night snapping pictures of people celebrating the new year, described it as "a great atmosphere".

He said: "Everybody seemed to be really enjoying themselves. It was a really great atmosphere, it was brilliant.

"It was all quite civilised and laid back - I'm sure there were a few people around who were slightly less sensible, but in the pubs everyone seemed to be behaving relatively sane.

"There weren't that many people about - but those that were seemed to be having fun, and enjoying the opportunity to dress up.

"It was all quite nice and quite pleasant."

While the hospitality industry on the mainland has ground to a halt, the population of 2,200 on Scilly is able to visit pubs and restaurants as it has remained virtually Covid-free with no recorded positive cases since September.
