NEW YORK _ The Islanders erased the bad memories of opening night 24 hours earlier thanks to three goals in a 1:47 span of the second period on the way to a 6-3 win over the Sabres on Saturday at Barclays Center.
John Tavares and Casey Cizikas scored short-handed goals 50 seconds apart on the same penalty to turn a 1-0 lead into a 3-0 cushion and get the crowd of 15,234 going for the home opener. Josh Bailey added an even-strength marker 57 seconds after Cizikas' goal to chase Sabres goaltender Robin Lehner.
Evander Kane scored two short-handed goals in the second period for the Sabres to chop the lead in half, but Anthony Beauvillier scored midway through the third to help the Isles to the win. Tavares and Cizikas each scored twice.
