Arran islanders' lifeline ferry services cancelled as disruption enters third day

Sailings between the mainland and the Isle of Arran have been cancelled today.

CalMac has confirmed this morning that there will be no services between Ardrossan and Brodick as disruption enters a third day.

The ferry operator had already announced that there would be no crossings between Tarbert, Argyll & Bute and Lochranza.

Storm Ciara and the effects of strong winds have played havoc with CalMac's timetable throughout the west coast.

However, an engine fault on the MV Caledonian Isles has been the major cause of disruption for the service between Ardrossan and Brodick.

In a statement on its website, CalMac said: "The port engine has been started and tests are being carried out whilst alongside.

"The vessel is planning to depart Brodick at 11.30am on sea trials which will take the rest of the day to complete. This means that there will be no sailings on this service today with the vessel remaining in Brodick overnight."

CalMac has already cancelled the 7am sailing from Ardrossan tomorrow morning but are planning for the 8.20am crossing from Brodick, where the boat is berthed, to go ahead.

"But all sailings are liable to disruption or cancellation at short notice," the company added.

On the railways, ScotRail say a replacement bus service is in operation between Kilmarnock and Dumfries following a landslip between Thornhill and Holywood, Dumfriesshire.
