Island off the coast of UK 'frozen in time' with no electricity and pub that doesn't close

Over the past year, many Brits have opted for a staycation over travelling abroad.

Instead of flying to foreign countries, we've been exploring some of the country's best attractions.

But if you're looking for something slightly different than the average beach holiday or city break, you may want to head to the isle of Lundy.

Located off the coast of North Devon, the tiny isle has no electricity overnight and phone signal is a rarity most locals aren’t even privy to, reports MyLondon.

Derek Green, the island’s general manager, told the BBC: “The beauty of Lundy is that it hasn't changed for many, many years; it's like stepping back to the 1950s.

“There are very few vehicles, no pollution, no noise, lots of wildlife. It's a place that is untouched by the modern world."

The name ‘Lundy’ translates to ‘puffin island’ in the Old Norse language due to the fact that puffins outnumber people at a ratio of 15:1.

The birds fly over the wildflower adorned cliffs and grassy meadows are dotted all around.

The pretty isle on the Bristol Channel was once used as a base for Vikings.

There is a 19th Century church, Victorian quarry ruins, a castle and a general store, stocked with essentials.

To the north, there is a moorland and only a few buildings take up space on the isle, which is only three miles long and half a mile wide.

One of those buildings is a pub called the Marisco Tavern.

Elsewhere on the isle, electricity generators shut down each night but the pub stays open for punters.

It apparently never closes its doors and offers shelter for tourists, travellers and inhabitants alike.

One thing to note is that the tavern has a strict no phones rule, punishable by a £1 fine for every use - not that they would be much use without signal.

Lundy is the perfect place for a social media detox.

Puffin season occurs from the end of March until August. April to July is considered the best time to visit to see the birds and Jenny’s Cove is the perfect place to spot them.
