An Islamic extremist has been killed by police in the German capital of Berlin after he stabbed an officer in an apparent terror attack.
The 41-year-old Iraqi citizen, identified only as Rafik Y, was shot dead by police after they responded to calls of a man wielding a knife.
The dead man was one of three who were convicted for plotting to assassinate the former Prime Minister of Iraq, Iyad Allawi, during his visit to Berlin in 2004.
As reported by The Telegraph, the female police officer was stabbed in the neck, just above her bulletproof vest, as she got out of her patrol car. The officer's partner then shot Rafik four times.

The stabbed officer was taken to hospital for emergency surgery for her stab wound. She was also shot in the kidney by a stray bullet, but is said to be "out of danger".

Paramedics attempted to save Rafik's life at the scene, but he died on his way to hospital.

After being convicted for his assassination plot, he was sentenced to eight years in prison. He was released early and allowed to stay in Germany, but had to wear an electronic tag.

Rafik and the other two plotters were also convicted for being members of Ansar al-Islam, a jihadist group linked to Al-Qaeda.
Berlin chief prosecutor Dirk Feuerberg said: “The person killed is an Iraqi citizen known to us who was convicted in 2008 of membership in a foreign terrorist organisation and sentenced to eight years imprisonment."
For hours after the incident, it was reported as the actions of a mentally ill man, but after Rafik's previous convictions were revealed, it became clear it was an act of terror.
