Isla Fisher Honours Confessions Of A Shopaholic Author Sophie Kinsella After Death At 55

Isla Fisher and Sophie Kinsella

Isla Fisher has shared an emotional tribute to her friend, English author Sophie Kinsella, on social media following her passing at age 55.

Sophie is best known for writing the Shopaholic series of novels, the first two of which were adapted into the popular 2009 film Confessions of a Shopaholic. Isla played Rebecca Bloomwood in the comedy flick, which marked her first leading role and helped cement her Hollywood breakthrough.

Sophie died in her home in Dorset on December 10 following a battle with glioblastoma. She was diagnosed with the aggressive form of brain cancer in late 2022 and made her diagnosis public in April 2024.

Isla Fisher’s tribute to Sophie Kinsella

Taking to her Instagram Stories on Thursday, Isla shared a photo of herself with Sophie and film producer Jerry Bruckheimer at the UK premiere of Confessions of a Shopaholic.

“Dear Sophie, you conjured Rebecca Bloomwood, a hilarious flawed dream of a comic character — and I was lucky enough to step into her shoes and speak your witty and brilliant words,” she wrote. “My daughters grew up being read your books and love them to this day. My heart is broken.”

Isla ended the post describing Sophie as her “hero” and said she will forever be grateful for her.

“And though we won’t meet again, your light and magic lives on in your incredible characters,” she continued.

The Aussie actress followed up the Instagram Story with an image of the Confessions of a Shopaholic poster and reposted a handful of scenes from the film.

“I’m so heartbroken that you are gone,” she wrote.

Sophie’s family announces her passing

Sophie’s family announced her death with a heartbreaking post to her Instagram account on Wednesday.

“We are heartbroken to announce the passing this morning of our beloved Sophie (aka Maddy, aka Mummy). She died peacefully, with her final days filled with her true loves: family and music and warmth and Christmas and joy,” they wrote.

“We can’t imagine what life will be like without her radiance and love of life. Despite her illness, which she bore with unimaginable courage, Sophie counted herself truly blessed — to have such wonderful family and friends, and to have had the extraordinary success of her writing career. She took nothing for granted and was forever grateful for the love she received.

“She will be missed so much our hearts are breaking.”

The post was quickly flooded with comments from fans sending their condolences and thanking her for her literary contributions.

“I don’t remember a single day when her books didn’t make my day better,” one person wrote, while another added, “Us romance readers owe you everything, Sophie”.

Sophie is survived by her husband, Henry Wickham, and their five children.
