ISIS militants escape Syrian prison after bombing by Turkish forces

Five ISIS militants were seen breaking out of a Syrian prison after a Turkish shelling nearby.

A video released by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) shows the moment the ISIS fighters fled a prison detaining them just inside the border with Turkey.

The facility is located in Qamishli, which has been brutally shelled by Turkish forces in the wake of President Trump's decision to withdraw US troops from the Kurdish-controlled region.

In the ensuing chaos, the five fighters escaped after an accomplice simply opened the prison door, the footage shows.

The breakout comes after ISIS claimed responsibility for a car bomb which rocked the Kurdish city on Friday, killing at least three people, according to Al Jazeera.

At the same time just 100km away, women thought to be associated with ISIS attacked security guards at a refugee camp in the town of Al-Hawl.

The SDF video shows families of ISIS members rioting in the camp, which has witnessed growing tension in the past few weeks.

Turkey and its Syrian allies have been leading an air and land offensive against the Kurdish forces in northeast Syria since Wednesday

The decision made by President Trump to withdraw US troops from the region has left Kurdish forces to face the Turkish invasion alone, leaving manpower stretched and camps such as the one at Al-Hawl woefully underguarded.

The UN reported on Friday that seven civilians had already died in the conflict, with over 70,000 people displaced from the border towns of Tal Abiad and Ras-al-Ain.

Another SDF official mentioned "recurring" bombings near the Jirkine prison, near Navkur, which also holds IS fighters as prisoners, according to Euronews.

The Turkish offensive has been condemned by several European countries, who have warned about the fate of IS fighters held in SDF prisons.

Around 12,000 IS fighters, among them Syrians, Iraqis, but also 2,500 to 3,000 foreign citizens from 54 countries, are held in Kurdish prisons, according to Abdel Karim Omar, an SDF official.

Kurdish authorities in the region manage seven high-security prisons.
