ISIS bride Shamima Begum 'gets legal aid to fight for British citizenship back'

ISIS bride Shamima Begum has been granted legal aid to fight for her British citizenship back, according to reports.

Her family have reportedly hired lawyer Gareth Peirce, who once represented hate preacher Abu Qatada.

The Daily Mail reports she has been awarded taxpayer cash to appeal against Home Secretary Sajid Javid's decision to revoke her citizenship.

It is estimated the bill to the public purse could now run into the thousands.

The Legal Aid Agency has reportedly agreed to grant funding to lawyers instructed by her family, from Bethnal Green, east London.

Begum's case will now be heard by the Special Immigration Appeals Commission, although she will not be present at any hearing while she is without rights to enter the UK.

Begum fled London to join the Syria in 2015.

Claims emerged yesterday Begum served in the Islamic State's "morality police", stitched suicide bombers' vents and actively tried to recruit other women to join the jihadist group.

The claims are in contrast to Begum's claims from her refugee camp in northern Syria insisting she lived only as housewife with her Dutch Islamic State fighter husband and cared for her three children, all of whom have since died.

The revelations angered MPs tonight who slammed a decision to fund her legal fight.

Tory MP Philip Davies said providing funding for a legal bill for someone who joined a group that wants to destroy Britain "disgusting".

Fellow Tory MP Tim Loughton added recent days' revelations had exposed "lies", accusing her of "playing the victim card".

Mr Javid ordered Begum stripped of her British citizenship amid the public outcry over her request to return home.

The Mail reports claims that Begum has not applied for legal aid herself, and hasn't formerly instructed lawyers.

The Telegraph reports that Begum's family is understood to have lodged a request a judicial review to challenge the Home Secretary's decision, and that Ms Peirce has taken over from Tasnime Akunjee, who was working pro bono for the Begum family.

The newspaper reports Mr Ajkunjee said his successor had been granted the "legal aid contract to do the work", suggesting British taxpayer funds will contribute to the legal fight speculated to be ahead.

The Home Office told the Mail: "We do not comment on individual cases, but any decisions to deprive individuals of their citizenship are based on all available evidence and not taken lightly."

A Legal Aid Agency spokesman said it was unable to comment on individual cases, adding "anybody applying for legal aid in a Special Immigration Appeal Commission case is subject to strict eligibility tests".

A Home Office spokesperson said: "In order to protect this country, (the Home Secretary) has the power to deprive someone of their British citizenship where it would not render them stateless.

"We do not comment on individual cases, but any decisions to deprive individuals of their citizenship are based on all available evidence and not taken lightly."
