ISIS bride Lisa Smith 'will not be arrested the moment she lands back in Ireland'

ISIS bride Lisa Smith will not be arrested the moment she returns to Ireland, it is understood.

The former Air Corps corporal - who was once based in Baldonnel - travelled to Syria three years ago.

She is now stuck in a refugee camp on the Syrian border near Iraq with her two-year-old daughter.

It is hoped the mother and her daughter will return to Ireland on a voluntarily basis, and she will not be arrested the moment she lands in Ireland but will be quizzed by gardai once on Irish soil, a source told the Irish Sunday Mirror .

Government will try bring 'ISIS bride' Lisa Smith back to Ireland, says Coveney

Because the Government has been making efforts to bring the former Defence Forces soldier home, gardai cannot be seen to arrest her immediately after she arrives back home.

Sections of the gardai tasked with security of the State are interested in speaking with Ms Smith, who worked as a flight attendant on the Government jet, the source said.

Specifically, the Special Detective Unit will want to know if she has any jihadi contacts here in Ireland, and how she became radicalised in the first place.

Government plan to bring 'ISIS bride' Lisa Smith back to Ireland

She will be asked about any jihadi contacts she has, how she travelled abroad and any contacts with radical elements in Ireland.

However, the source said there would be no real point in arresting Ms Smith, as it is unclear what charges could be brought against her.

Gardai will liaise with military intelligence, and will jointly assess whether she poses a risk here in Ireland.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said a security assessment will be carried out on Ms Smith.

It also emerged yesterday (SAT) that the Dundalk native hadn’t been seen in the Al Hawl refugee camp for a number of days. A source added that this could indicate that the mother and her daughter could well be in transit.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it could not provide ongoing comment on Ms Smith’s situation, while the Irish Defence Forces said the case was a matter for the DFA.

On Friday, Irish muslim leader Dr Umar Al-Qadri claimed Ms Smith’s young daughter should be taken away from the former Air Corps corporal upon their return to Ireland.

“I believe the child will not be safe with a mother that holds such radical, extremist views and is OK with the type of horrors that were committed by the Islamic State,” said Dr Al-Qadri, chair of the Irish Muslim Peace & Integration Council.

Last week, Ms Smith claimed that she just “ran with the crowd” to join the Islamic death cult.

In an interview with the Irish Mail On Sunday, she said she now wants to return home to Ireland.

She also revealed that her husband was a British Jihadist whose first wife, from Omagh, Co Tyrone, was jailed for plotting to raise her children in Syria under Isis.

Ms Smith said her husband, whom she named as British citizen Sajid Aslam, had been involved in fighting, and was probably been killed in the last three months.

His former wife, Lorna Moore, was jailed for two-and-a-half years for not telling authorities about her husband’s plans to join Isis and for planning to take her three young children to Syria to live under Isis.
