ISIS bride Lisa Smith 'must be arrested' when she arrives back in Ireland, senator claims

ISIS bride Lisa Smith must be arrested as soon as she steps off the plane when it arrives at Dublin Airport, a leading senator claimed.

The 38-year old Isis supporter is being booted out of Turkey in the coming days but there are doubts about whether not she will face charges when returns home.

But Senator Gerard Craughwell has demanded Smith be arrested immediately when she steps off a plane onto Irish soil.

The former soldier said that she “should not be allowed to freely walk the streets of Dublin” without first being thoroughly interrogated, “debriefed and deradicalised.”

He said: He said: “There is no doubt in my mind, that at the very least, she comes back here as a person of interest.

“That means she should not be allowed just step off the plane and head on her way.

“She should not be allowed to freely walk the streets of Dublin without being interrogated first.”

Turkey said it is planning to deport two Irish nationals held in Syria this week.

One is believed to be Lisa Smith, 38, who went to Syria a few years ago to live in the so-called Islamic State.

The former Air Corps member, from Dundalk, Co Louth, and her two-year-old daughter are thought to be somewhere near the Turkish border, having escaped from a camp in Syria which held family members of IS.

Today, a Turkish official was quoted as sayin legal proceedings for “two Irish nationals were about to end” and that they would be deported soon.

It is unclear if the second person is Alexander Bekmirzaev, 45, or his wife Irina, who does not hold an Irish passport, however her six-year old son is an Irish citizen.

“She should not be allowed to freely walk the streets of Dublin without being interrogated first.

“That will involve a complete debriefing, and ultimately, deradicalisation.”

Smith has denied being a jihadi and claims her child was born to a British father, a suspected member of the terror group who was killed last year.

She remains unrepentant and does not regret becoming involved with Isis which was involved mass murder.

However, officials at the Department of Foreign Affairs are not happy with Irish citizens are being branded as terrorists.

A source told the Irish Mirror: “Not only do we have the welfare of a two year old child at the centre of this, but we now very clearly have Turkey telling States like Ireland that our citizens are our problem.”

It is also not known if Smith’s daughter will also be deported.

State broadcaster TRT Haber yesterday said Turkey aimed to repatriate around 2,500 militants, most to EU countries. It is known Smith was in the same tent as Bekmirzaev and her son in the sprawling Ain Issa camp in northern Syria.

There was controversy last week when it emerged that Department of Foreign Affairs officials and members of the elite Irish Army Rangers were in Turkey trying to secure Smith’s repatriation. There were also reports the Government Jet was to be used but these plans were dropped when it emerged it would costs tens of thousands of euro to repatriate a suspected terrorist.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has already indicated Smith would be permitted to return to Ireland if she wished.

It is unclear if she will face charges when she arrives in Dublin but she will be interrogated to obtain details about her time with Isis. It is believed she may have vital information on a terrorist who fought with the terror group and who has since returned to Ireland.

Assistant Garda Commissioner Michael O’Sullivan, who is in charge of the force’s security and intelligence, has said his officers have been gathering evidence on Smith.

He added she can be prosecuted under existing legislation but that will be a matter for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

He told RTE news that he believes his officers will bring “a comprehensive file” to the DPP.

Smith left her Muslim husband because he refused to travel with her to go and live in Islamic State-controlled Syria.

Turkey began deporting Isis terrorists yesterday with a German and an American being kicked out.

Ankara has accused European countries of being too slow to take back citizens who travelled to fight in the Middle East.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu had said last week Turkey would begin to repatriate Islamic State militants even if the nations the fighters came from had revoked their citizenship. His colleague Ismail Catakli did not specify where the German and American had been sent to.

The 23 others to be deported in coming days were all European, including a Dane expected to be put on a plane last night. sent abroad later on

Nine other Germans and 11 French citizens are also set to be deported in the next few days.
