Isetan Mitsukoshi Ltd. has launched a new service that uses technology to measure body size in five seconds and suggest suitable clothing for female customers.
Using Wacoal Corp.'s 3D measurement technology, "Match Palette" suggests a choice of outfits to fit body shapes.
The system is expected to reduce the chance of interacting with shop clerks and thereby prevent infection from the new coronavirus.
Match Pallette gathers data by measuring 18 points on the body -- including the waist and thighs -- and classifies each customer into one of 27 body types, which professional stylists then base suggestions on when choosing from about 50 fashion brands. The service started on Wednesday at Isetan Shinjuku, the main store in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo.
By using the service, customers can bypass the hassle of trying on clothes and taking measurements repeatedly. They can buy recommended items on the spot or buy them later online. They can also consult stylists via the free Line communication app.
"I hope customers will experience shopping that suits the new normal, with assistance from the latest digital technology and the power of people, which is the strength of department stores," an Isetan Mitsukoshi official said.
