Isaac Hayden explains Newcastle United superstition that 'sounds weird' but fans will love reason

Isaac Hayden wears a different pair of trainers if Newcastle United lose a game and the Magpies' midfielder knows his pre-match superstitution 'sounds weird'.

Footballers have long had some interesting rituals they adhere to as part of their preparations for games.

James Perch, for example, used to opt against wearing the club's tracksuit jacket before the versatile defender wisely changed his mind ahead of Newcastle's odyssey to chilly Kharkiv in the Europa League in 2013.

Those superstitions have long intrigued supporters and, as part of Newcastle's Zoom Army feature, Hayden was asked if he had any quirky rituals by fan Lakin Bone.

"I don't really have any to be honest with you," he told NUFC TV. "I do similar things every time before games.

"The weird one actually is I wear a certain pair of trainers to the game and if we win, I keep the same pair of trainers the next game.

"If we draw, we keep the same pair but if we lose, I change the pair so that's probably it.

"I know it sounds weird but I started it last year and I have kind of carried it on this year. So if we win, I wear the same pair of trainers to the game but as soon as we lose, I switch the pair up."

Hayden will miss Sunday's game against Leicester City at St James' Park after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season against champions Liverpool earlier this week.
