Is Who Wants to Be a Millionaire live or recorded and has anyone ever won?

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? was the definitive quiz show of the early noughties.

And thanks to ITV's latest drama Quiz, it is back on everyone's minds once again.

James Graham's latest screen writing export depicts one of the most controversial moments in game show television.

It follows contestant Major Charles Ingram who cheated his way to winning the show's £1m jackpot.

And revisiting the infamous episode has led to plenty of questions about the once prime time quiz show.

The original series aired for from September 4 1998 to February 11 2014, and was presented by Chris Tarrant.

Over the course of its initial run, only five contestants managed to become millionaires.

Judith Keppel became the first ever contestant to win £1m on November 20 November 2000.

David Edwards was next to win the big prize in April 2001 and he wasn't the only lucky winner that year as in September Robert Brydges walked away with the cheque.

Pat Gibson followed in April 2004 and finally Ingram Wilcox became the fifth person to win the top prize in 2006.

Another question being asked is whether the episodes aired live.

With the exception of special episodes, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire was pre-recorded.

Originally the shows were broadcast on successive evenings for around 10 days, before ITV modified its broadcast schedule in autumn 2000.

This was so the successful show could air in a prime time slot on Saturday evenings.
