Is this the stupidest street sign in Manchester?

This could quite possibly be the most ineffective road sign in Manchester.

The traffic sign, at the junction of Sussex Street and Marsden Street in the city centre, was put there to inform drivers that they can only turn left.

Or at least it would, if they could actually see it.

Unfortunately, the sign is obscured by a large white column on an adjacent building, making it almost impossible to see from a distance.

City centre police spotted the potentially dangerous problem after a driver was caught out by the elusive sign.

Sharing details on Twitter, they explained that a colleague was about to speak to the driver after seeing them turn the wrong way onto the one-way street.

That was until they realised that the sign was almost impossible to spot when driving along Sussex Street, because it 'has a building in front of it'.

Police went on to explain that the road sign actually pre-dates the column, which appears to have been added during renovations, and prior to that, it was actually visible.

Posting on Twitter, GMP City Centre said: "I now see on old street views that the sign was there first before the long thin supporting column of the building expanded during a refurb or rebuild.

"Let’s see who moves first. The sign or the building."

Google street view images from 2017 show how the sign appeared before it was blocked by the new column.

Police also shared a link to the council's website, where the public can report faults with street lights, bollards and road signs.
