Like any window, cockpit windshields should be cleaned. Normally, these methods will either include mild detergent with water or aviation glass cleaner. But what about a sparkling beverage? An airline passenger sought answers from 7 million viewers after witnessing an airline pilot clean his cockpit windows with what she believed was Sprite.
In a 12-second clip, airline passenger Arianna (@mamasdeaniebabie) asks in the text overlay, “Ummm, can someone explain to me why this pilot just cleaned the windows with Sprite?”
She films a pilot standing out of a blue plane cockpit window, wiping the windshield with a paper towel to the infamous Jet Blue sound bite. Then, he reaches inside the plane to pull out another paper towel along with a can of fizzy drink. Although the content creator thought it was a can of Sprite, upon closer inspection, the color of it appears to be a lime-flavored La Croix.
What baffles Arianna is that he cracks it open, dumps some of the bubbly contents onto the windshield, and mops it up with the towel. She never names which airline the pilot works for, but the wing of the plane appears to sport the Southwest Airlines logo.
Arianna reiterates her question in the caption, “Is this like a thing? I’m so confused.”
The comments section proved to be mostly unhelpful
Instead of answering her question, many viewers cracked jokes.
“Soda sticky. Sticky stick to air so plane [stays] in air,” one viewer quipped.
“The plane has a belly ache,” another joked.
“It’s cause they were out of Dr Pepper,” a third jested.
However, very few and far between proposed explanations.
“Because that’s what he had handy, that simple. Window dirty, put wet stuff on dirt, wipe off. Window now cleaner,” one commenter remarked.
“Its like using Coca cola to clean your battery posts, [it eats] up corrosion!” a second stated.
Is La Croix an effective window cleaning agent?
The Kitchin explains how La Croix makes a good window cleaner. Due to the citric acid in the seltzer, it can tackle stains and kill bacteria, making it a great all-purpose cleaner. Not only that, but it can eliminate grout and grease. However, it’s best to use a spray bottle and a microfiber cloth to tackle the job. On the other hand, the better option would’ve been to use Sprite because phosphoric acid in the drink removes hard water stains, mineral deposits, grime, and grease. When opting for Sprite or any soda as a window cleaner, water is needed to clean up afterward.
Regardless of whether the pilot had La Croix or Sprite, both can work to clean windows.
