Is there hot weather or a heatwave on the way for Ireland? Met Eireann's latest forecast

As much of Europe is roasted by a heatwave, Ireland looks set to see at least another week of wet and windy weather.

Forecasters aren't seeing any signs of a turn in conditions with the rest of the month looking bleak - despite the continent seeing record breaking temperatures.

There is hope however that Ireland will get a bit more dry weather than in recent weeks, although scorching temperatures aren't likely to accompany it.

In their long-range forecast, Met Eireann chiefs predict the next seven days will be "continuing unsettled" with "drier conditions developing early next week".

The forecast says: "Generally settled conditions are signalled across many areas with a good deal of dry weather likely, as high pressure dominates. Predicted wind direction is northerly at first, reverting to southerly towards the end of period so temperatures likely to be near or slightly below average at first recovering to near or slightly above average by the end of Week 1.

"Drier than average conditions are signalled but this doesn’t preclude the chance of showers. Current indications suggest a rather cloudy week with greater chance of sunshine towards the end of the period."

Here's what the forecaster is predicting for the weeks after...

Week 2( Monday 23 August to Sunday 29 August)

"High pressure remains the dominant indicator during this period, however, the signal is weaker than during Week 1. Similar conditions to Week 1 are most likely at first during Week 2 but there is an increased chance of showers or longer spells of rain towards the end of the August. Rainfall amounts are signalled to remain below normal in parts of the west and northwest, but near average for late August elsewhere. Temperatures are signalled to be a little above average through this period."

Week 3 (Monday 30 August to Sunday 05 September)

"Confidence becomes very low in the prevailing weather patterns as we head into early September with no strong signal towards high or low pressure. This is a typical scenario given the time of year with the height of the hurricane season in the Atlantic creating increased uncertainties in predictions for northwest Europe. Rainfall and temperature signals for this period are mostly muted or neutral with no strong signal evident either way."

Week 4 (Monday 06 September to Sunday 12 September)

"Confidence remains very low in prevailing weather patterns for week 4 for reasons stated above in Week 3. Again, rainfall and temperature signals for this period are neutral."
