Is there anywhere better than the North East on a sunny bank holiday? These pictures prove not

The North East basked in perfect sunshine this Sunday, on what was a record-breaking bank holiday weekend.

On the coast at Tynemouth , temperatures hit 25C, while inland, parts of the region sweltered in heat up to 28C.

In Newcastle , the green at Old Eldon Square and the grassy areas on Grey Street were thronged with sunbathers and children playing in the tropical heat.

Thousands flocked to the regions beaches, with Longsands and Kings Edward's Bay proving as popular as ever.

And really, where else would you want to be?

We might not be too used to temperatures making it much past 20C in the North East, but on the rare occasions it happens, we've got some of the best coastline and scenery in the country to enjoy the good weather in.

In Newcastle's Exhibition Park, the warm weather had arrived in perfect time for the city's Mela, the annual celebration of South Asian culture.

Bright sun beat down on the joyful crowds, enjoying music, food and art from the continent and sharing in the festival's vibrant buzz.

For those looking for a more sedate way to spend a weekend, it was a perfect time to top up the tan.

Luckily for anyone who was overheating, the still fairly icy waters of the North Sea provided an excellent way to stay cool.
