Is the stock market open on Memorial Day in 2025? The answer to this question is no. The stock market will be closed Monday, May 26, for Memorial Day.
The federal holiday, which was originally known as Decoration Day, honors fallen military personnel. Memorial Day also serves as the unofficial start of summer, and market participants have a lot to look forward to over the next several months.
Stocks have staged an impressive recovery off their April lows after President Donald Trump backtracked or paused many of his aggressive tariffs.
But risks still remain, says Kristian Kerr, head of macro strategy for LPL Financial. For one, economic data tend to lag, Kerr notes, meaning the full impact of Trump's tariffs may not be seen until next month at the earliest.
"Additionally, the current policy landscape remains in flux, with broader tariffs largely paused until early July and China exempt from significant tariff increases until August 12," Kerr says.
Any economic weakness or deterioration in trade negotiations could spark "another meaningful bout of market volatility," which would coincide with "historical seasonal patterns where equities often struggle from late summer into fall."
But not all hope is lost, and there are plenty of ways investors can protect their portfolios against a roller-coaster market. Low-volatility ETFs, for instance, offer a lower risk profile by focusing on high-quality stocks with defensive qualities.
And Wall Street's top cash cows use their fortress-like balance sheets to reward investors through dividends and stock buybacks.
The bond market is closed too
Bond traders will get a long weekend, too, and then some. Not only is the bond market closed on Monday, May 26, for Memorial Day, but it closes early at 2 pm Eastern on Friday, May 23.
For those wondering what time does the market open for regular trading hours, both the Nasdaq Stock Market and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) run from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm Eastern time Monday through Friday.
Are banks open on Memorial Day? The answer to that question is no. Monday, May 26, is one of several bank holidays in 2025, and so banks will be closed on Memorial Day.
