Is The Queen's Gambit on Netflix based on a true story?

The Queen's Gambit is Netflix users latest obsession.

The drama follows the rise of chess prodigy Beth Harmon in the middle of the 20th century.

Released at the end of last month, the miniseries has been watched in its droves having been viewed by 62 million households during its first month.

Off the back of the show's success, The Queen's Gambit, the 1983 novel upon which the series was based, has also entered the New York Times bestseller list.

Starring Anya Taylor-Joy as Beth, it follows a young chess prodigy's rise from an orphanage to the world stage. But her genius comes with a cost.

The drama has left people wondering if it's based on a true story.

We're sorry to disappoint but the story itself is fictional and drawn from the 1983 coming-of-age novel of the same name by Walter Tevis.

However, it is said that some of Beth's story is resembles world-renowned chess champion Bobby Fischer.

Like Beth he was also a teenage chess prodigy and they both won the U.S. championship in 1967. They both also learned Russian so they could play in the country.

In the acknowledgements of The Queen's Gambit, Tevis wrote that he was inspired by Grandmasters Robert Fischer, Boris Spassky, and Anatoly Karpov.
