Is the Blair a Catholic?

He's off to Washington, he's off to Germany - but will Tony Blair shortly be going to the Vatican?

Will he convert to Roman Catholicism, that is? That's the claim in today's Times - actually, in fact, a rehash of our own David Hencke's biography of Tony and Cherie, which made the same points and the same claim.

The evidence, such as it is, is that Blair already attends Catholic masses with his Catholic wife, has received communion and the children were enrolled in Catholic schools.

And the reason that he hasn't thus far followed in the wake of politicians such as the late Alan Clark and Ann Widdecombe and formally renounced the Church of England and converted to Roman Catholicism?

The delicate sensibilities of the Northern Irish peace process. It's safe to say it wouldn't have gone down well with the Rev Ian Paisley - who once described Pope John Paul II as the Antichrist.

Although his then spin-doctor Alastair Campbell famously said "We don't do God", and Tony Blair repeatedly refused to confirm speculation that he and George Bush had prayed together, there's another link in the chain - Mr Blair's former Europe advisor, Sir Stephen Wall, is now press advisor to the head of the Catholic church in England and Wales, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor.
