’Is that legal?:’ Donald Trump and his buddies freeze funds for Democratic states, but that is not how politics works

Donald Trump and his band of Republican brothers are exploiting the United States Government’s ongoing shutdown to its highest potential. After threatening to take away the jobs of several federal workers on the occasion of the shutdown, Trump and his allies are back to using their pressure tactics to target Democrats.

On Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the White House decided to freeze the funds of several Democratic states, in one of the biggest blows against the political party. As a result of the decision, an amount of approximately $26 billion to be used towards infrastructural improvements in these states has been withheld from them.

Russell T Vought, the Budget Director for the White House, in a comment to the people, gave a breakdown of the amount that was frozen. Talking of the same, he mentioned that $18 billion dedicated to developments in transportation systems in New York City was suspended from being sanctioned based on “unconstitutional DEI principles.” What he means by that is that he and his Republican allies do not want anyone else besides the ones they closely align with to reap the benefits of structural improvements in the U.S. Vought also mentioned that $8 billion in climate funding, which he referred to as “Green New Scam funding” for 16 states (the ones with Democratic party majority) had been cancelled.

Since the news of the Republicans attacking the Democrats through such despicable acts became public, many have been wondering if they are allowed to do so. A user took to X (previously Twitter) and said:

“Silly question: is that legal?”

Many others followed suit and asked the same questions. This is because, while slandering each other in politics is quite common, recently, no one has stooped to the level at which Trump and his allies have. Not to mention, if he continues to implement his plan and refuses to compromise with the Democrats to coexist with the Republicans, they might risk leading an authoritarian government.
