It might be the height of Summer but some people are already in the mood for Halloween as one video on TikTok shows.
There’s some creepy stuff out there on the internet and some of it might even be real. The clip in question is mighty spooky, as it shows a mysterious figure standing in a lake. The individual recording is unsure exactly what they’re looking at as they can be repeatedly heard saying, “what the f*** is that?”
At one point they get uncomfortably close but if it is a person then it seems they never find out as the video ends without a conclusion being reached. Maybe the person in the water got them after all.
The clip has people on TikTok stumped over whether it’s a clever marketing ploy, a weird statue, or scariest of all, an authentic creep who just fancied going for a dip. It certainly gives a creepy vibe and the background music (Rudyard Kipling’s Boots poem) serves to make a fantastically scary video that would be certain to creep you out if you watched it in the dead of night.
TikTok sleuths take a closer look
A few had viewers gave reasonably sound explanations, claiming that people in Perth have a habit of dressing up statues. This could be what the figure in the water is, an innocent statue that has been dressed up by the locals as a prank.
While that first theory sounds believable, one observant viewer pointed out that the figure’s arms change position between cuts in the video. A statue wouldn’t do that which means we can rule out that possibility. Of course, that only serves to make things even more mysterious. Another viewer also noticed it, writing, “the stance was different in every clip …. Definitely something scary.”
A few suggested that the figure was “La Llorona” a ghostly Mexican/Latin American legend which is supposed to be the spirit of a woman who drowned her children. What a Latin American ghost is doing in Australia is beyond me but it’s a possibility (even if it is unlikely).
So what is that thing in the water?
Looking at the account behind the video it seems to be a viral marketing ploy. The TikTok account belongs to Seasons Perth, a festival that takes place in the city. Tickets have just gone on sale for the brand’s Halloween festival which means the creepy video was likely all a part of an elaborate viral marketing campaign.
Admittedly it’s a pretty genius marketing tactic, it’s attention grabbing and immediately piques the viewers interest. Pretty much all ghost videos on TikTok either have a reasonable explanation or are fake, but that doesn’t make them any less fun to watch. Clearly the ploy worked too well as it seems a lot of viewers haven’t cottoned on to the fact the video was just a clever piece of advertising.
