The beloved Subnautica is getting a sequel, with Subnautica 2 slated to launch in Early Access in 2026. The underwater survival franchise enjoyed huge success with its Early Access development model, and Unknown Worlds Entertainment is using the same approach once more for the follow-up. Alongside the usual Steam Early Access, Subnautica 2 will also be coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one, giving console players a chance to dive into a brand new alien ocean from launch.
When is Subnautica 2 coming to Game Pass?
Subnautica 2’s original launch window was set for 2025, with a Game Pass release alongside it. However, the game was delayed to 2026 after a series of changes at Unknown Worlds and a legal battle with Krafton. Now, the game has finally set a launch date, May 14, 2026. The game was also confirmed for a day one release on Game Pass, meaning both PC and Xbox subscribers can gain access to the game on May 14 through the Xbox Game Preview program.

What is Xbox Game Preview?
Subnautica 2 will arrive on Game Pass through Xbox Game Preview, Microsoft’s early access program, meaning the game will still be in active development when it launches. Unknown Worlds expects the game to stay in early access for 2-3 years. Game Pass members can jump in on day one at no extra cost, while non-subscribers will need to purchase it outright.
Can you play the original Subnautica on Game Pass?
While the sequel is headed to Game Pass, the original Subnautica is no longer playable on the service. Both it and its follow-up Subnautica:Below Zero have featured on Game Pass before, but neither is currently on the service. So if you want to experience the franchise as a whole, you will have to purchase the original two ahead of Subnautica 2’s launch.
