Is Shah Rukh Khan and Atlee's 'Jawan' similar to Sam Raimi and Liam Neeson's 'Darkman'? Fans seem to think so

Shah Rukh Khan on Friday unveiled the first look teaser of his upcoming action entertainer with director Atlee, titled 'Jawan'.

"An action-packed 2023! Bringing #Jawan to you, an explosive entertainer in cinemas 2nd June 2023," the superstar said as he shared the teaser on his social media handles. The 1 minute 30 seconds clip featured SRK with his head and hands in bandages, in a secret hideout full of machine guns, explosive ammo and some outdated tech to keep him in the loop with the outside world. Unlike the other Bollywood heroes, this film will see SRK, bloodied, and bruised and will have most of his face wrapped in bandages.

If Shah Rukh Khan's avatar in this clip left you with the feeling of deja vu, it may be because you watched the 1990 Sam Raimi anti-hero film 'Darkman'.

Starring Liam Neeson as a vengeful Marvel antihero, 'Darkman' followed expert scientist Peyton Westlake who is in the process of developing artificial skin, when his lab mysteriously blows up with him inside.

Driven mad with his injuries and filled with the spirit of vengeance, he becomes 'Darkman' and sets out for blood. "They destroyed everything he had, everything he was. Now, crime has a new enemy and justice has a new face," read the synopsis of the film.

Fans were quick to take note of the similar character design as they took to Twitter to start comparing 'Jawan' to the Marvel anti-hero 'Darkman'.

Check out their reactions below:

Besides some similarities, it is highly unlikely that SRK's next will have much in common with the '90s Hollywood flick, considering that 'Darkman' mostly steps out in the cover of the night as his synthetic skin only lasts 99 minutes when exposed to the light.

Talking about the film, Shah Rukh Khan said, “Jawan is a universal story that goes beyond languages, geographies and is for all to enjoy. Credit goes to Atlee for creating this unique film, which has also been a fantastic experience for me as I love action films! The teaser is the just tip of the iceberg and gives a glimpse into what’s to come."

Slated for a June 2, 2023 release, the film that went on floors early this year will release in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.
