So it turns out Rotoworld’s latest podcast is a very worthwhile listen for Dolphins fans across multiple fronts.
While the group of Josh Norris, Raymond Summerlin and Patrick Daugherty also speculated on Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill’s viability to be a starter next season, they also made a forecast for who should start for the Dolphins in 2019.
Is there enough room for two Fitz-magics on the Dolphins roster in 2019?
Summerlin makes the argument that veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick as a 2019 free agent signing and starter for the Dolphins is “perfect”.
Why? The discussion centers around the team still wanting to be fun and score some points this season. But doing so could potentially threaten the long play for a 2020 quarterback for the Dolphins and be counter-productive. So Fitzpatrick, who will “make plays, have fun on offense but throw enough interceptions that you still get a (top 3) pick” is the guy, in their opinion.
Fitzpatrick has played 14 NFL seasons with 8 different teams. With a 50-75-1 record in 126 games as a starter, Fitzpatrick doesn’t appear to be a threat to elevate the Dolphins out of a top pick in 2020.
Like nearly every bridge quarterback, Fitzpatrick has no viability as a long-term solution. Should the Dolphins decide their answer isn’t in this year’s NFL Draft (or even if it is), an established veteran addition makes sense.
Even better, Fitzpatrick played this past season for Tampa Bay under a 1-year, $3.3M contract, so bringing him in to hold over the team wouldn’t break the bank.
