Scotland’s hopes of qualifying for Euro 2020 via the group stage are hanging by a thread at best after successive defeats to Russia and Belgium last time out.
The Scots face the Russians is Moscow on Thursday for the return fixture knowing a defeat puts second place, currently occupied by Russia, beyond them.
Thankfully, there is the safety net of the UEFA Nations League play-offs to come next year, although Steve Clarke needs a positive display from his side after an unconvincing start to hes Scotland tenure.
The defeat to Russia at Hampden was perhaps the most disappointing of all results under Clarke so far, being a game Scotland felt they could win and put them right back in the mix. John McGinn’s opener got things off to a good start but Artem Dzubya’s leveler then Stephen O’Donnell’s second half own goal gave the visitors a deserved three points.
