Is pizza really a more balanced breakfast than a bowl of cereal? This dietitian thinks so

Hands up who had a bowl of cereal for breakfast this morning? Well, according to one dietitian, you'd have been better off with a slice of pizza.

Yes, seriously.

Ms Chelsey Amer, a New York-based expert, says that the takeaway favourite could actually prove a more balanced breakfast than your favourite cereal.

This is due to the carbs, protein and fat it contains, rather than the largely sugary, carb-heavy alternative.

The dietitian told ABC News: "Surprisingly, pizza can be more balanced breakfast option than many sugar-filled breakfast cereals.

"A slice of plain cheese pizza contains a balance of carbs, protein and fat.

"A bowl of sugary cereal with low fat milk is largely sugar and extremely carb heavy."

However that doesn't mean it's a good idea to grab a slice of pizza before work each morning.

Ms Amer doesn't think pizza should be regarded as an 'everyday breakfast' but says people should put an emphasis on trying to enjoy a balance of fibre, carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats to stay full in the morning.

If you're confused about which breakfast cereal to go for the NHS recommends looking one out which contains wholegrain.

Speaking to the NHS, dietician Azmina Govindji said: "Avoid always going for the same brand, as manufacturers regularly modify their recipes

"Try looking at the nutrition label, and compare brands so you opt for the healthier version."
