A video claiming that petrol is cheaper in Bhutan than in India is going viral on social media. In the clip, a person alleges that fuel supplied by Indian petroleum companies to Bhutan is being sold there at much lower prices than in India.
However, the claim has been found to be misleading.
According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the viral video is old and is being shared out of context to spread misinformation.
“A video circulating on social media claims that the petrol supplied by Indian petroleum companies to Bhutan is being sold at a significantly lower price in Bhutan than in India. This video is old and is used out of context to mislead citizens,” PIB said in a post on X.
PIB also shared a link for users to check the latest fuel prices in Bhutan.
Fuel prices in India were recently increased by Rs 3 per litre for both petrol and diesel. Meanwhile, several neighbouring countries had already implemented fuel price hikes earlier.
Here’s how fuel prices compare across the region after converting them into Indian currency:
Pakistan
- Petrol: Around Rs 141 per litre
- Diesel: Around Rs 141 per litre
According to the latest available rates, petrol in Pakistan costs Pakistani Rs 414.78 per litre, while diesel is priced at Pakistani Rs 414.58 per litre.
Nepal
- Petrol: Around Rs 134 per litre
- Diesel: Around Rs 139 per litre
Bangladesh
- Petrol: Around Rs 109 per litre
- Diesel: Around Rs 90 per litre
The viral Bhutan petrol price claim, therefore, does not present the full picture and has been flagged as misleading by the government fact-checking agency.
Meanwhile, CNG prices have been hiked in India for the second time. Today, CNG prices have been raised by Rs 1. Earlier, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that while many countries have seen petrol and diesel prices rise by 20 per cent to nearly 100 per cent, India has managed to keep the increase relatively low at 3.2 per cent for petrol and 3.4 per cent for diesel.
