Is Netflix’s The Endless Night based on a true story? The tragic tale of Brazil's deadly Kiss nightclub fire

Netflix has released a gripping new series which tells the story of a deadly nightclub fire. In The Endless Night, viewers are told the tragic story of the Kiss Nightclub fire, which claimed the lives of more than 200 young adults, followed by their parents’ ensuing fight for justice.

The five-part Brazilian miniseries – originally titled Todo Dia a Mesma Noite – is a fictional retelling of a real event that struck the South American country in 2013. It remembers and pays homage to the 242 people who were killed in a fire at the Kiss Nightclub in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul – the southernmost state in Brazil.

The fire made headlines around the world, and became the third-deadliest nightclub fire in history. The harrowing event unfolded on January 26, during a party at the nightclub organised by students from six universities in the area, and at which two bands were scheduled to perform.

In the early hours of January 27, a fire broke out after a band used pyrotechnics as part of their performance. According to local officials, as reported by Reuters, sparks from devices used for visual effects set fire to foam soundproofing on the ceiling and the club rapidly filled with toxic smoke.

A crowd crush occurred during the incident, and a locked door prevented many victims from escaping. According to the official investigation, the venue had no functioning fire extinguishers and poor emergency signage, with only two emergency exits.

The fire claimed the lives of 242 people, most of whom were students between 17 and 30 years old. A total of 600 people were injured, with most of the victims dying of smoke inhalation.

In 2021, eight years after the tragedy, the two owners of the club and two band members were found guilty of murder and attempted murder. Elissandro Spohr and Mauro Hoffmann, the nightclub owners, were sentenced to 22 and 19 years in prison respectively, the BBC reported.

Band members Marcelo de Jesus dos Santos and Luciano Bonilha Leão were each given a jail term of 18 years.
