"Is my money safe in the bank" - GMB's Martin Lewis advices viewers on savings accounts amid coronavirus

Financial expert Martin Lewis has revealed whether your money is currently safe in the bank during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Money Saving Expert was answering questions on Good Morning Britain, when Kate Garraway said: "This one, a lot of people have said.

Martin Lewis advised viewers on whether they should be withdrawing money from their savings accounts (ITV)

"Is our money safe in our banks? One viewer said he's knows people have cleared their bank accounts out and are holding cash.

"They're so worried about it, there's a feeling that things are crashing."

Martin replied: "Things are certainly safer in your bank than being held in your home, where only home insurance is protecting you. You normally only get up to £1,000 protection.

"The rules in the UK are simple.

"In a UK regulated savings account, which almost every single one that anyone has heard of, are that you are protected up to £85,000 per person per financial institution.

"That is backed up by the government, who I would think would be very surprised to see if they let the bank go bust at the moment, because it's so crucial, even if it did they would probably move the savings pot.

"If the state went bust, we'd all have a bigger problem with our savings.

"I would suggest, up to £85,000 in any financial institution, you are safe."

Martin Lewis has also answered lots of questions surrounding coronavirus on his ITV money show.

The savings guru has been giving viewers advice about everything from universal credit to being self-employed to moving house.
