Is Mick dead in EastEnders? Danny Dyer centre of 'Harold Bishop' twist theory after exit

Upset EastEnders fans are calling on the soap's bosses to line up a Harold Bishop style twist for Danny Dyer, after the popular actor's character Mick Carter made a heartbreaking and very dramatic exit on Christmas Day.

While ITV rival Coronation Street went for a more light hearted affair for its festive special, with Fizz and Tryone getting married, in EastEnders it was largely drama all the way, with most of that centered on the Carters, in the aftermath of Mick's wedding to Albert Square super villain Janine. For months now, viewers have been willing the truth about Mick ex wife's Linda's 'drink drive' crash, which very nearly saw her land behind bars after Janine framed her, to come out.

*SPOILER ALERT* And thanks to Jada finally coming clean on making it look like recovering alcoholic Linda was still drinking and Janine's daughter Scarlett exposing her mum's lies, the truth unravelled to ensure that there was anything but festive cheer in the Queen Vic. Realising she was done for, Janine fled Walford, with Mick and Linda giving chase in his car.

The frantic pursuit ended on the White Cliffs of Dover and, after Janine plunged over the edge and into the sea, with Linda in the passenger seat, Mick dived in after them, rescuing pregnant Janine first, before going back in for Linda, only for her to emerge on land after managing to escape the sunken car herself.

Realising Mick had gone into save her, Linda was left screaming at the sea, knowing Mick was still in the water. However, given, that there was no actual 'death scene' or sign of a body by the time credits rolled, EastEnders fans are hoping for Mick to have a Harold Bishop twist, to bring him back years later.

Neighbours favourite Harold went missing in the early 90s, while by the sea with wife Madge, with her finding his glasses as she helplessly shouted out his name. However, Harold ended up coming back, believing himself to be called Ted, as Ramsey Street residents fought to get him to remember who he really was.

And, as they try to come to terms with Sunday night's gripping conclusion, EastEnders viewers are now wanting the door to be let open for Mick and former Football Factory star Danny. One tweeted: "As long as they never find Micks body then #Eastenders can give Danny Dyer a year or two to get the Hollywood thing out of his system and then Pull a Harold Bishop, bring Mick back with amnesia after suffering a head injury at sea. One look at Linda & it all comes flooding back!"

A second reacted: "Well played #Eastenders, that was intense. I really hope this is a Harold Bishop type of situation" and there were that many tweets on a similar note, that #HaroldBishop became one of the top trends on Twitter.
