Is Marvin Lewis trying to set up for an NFL return?

Former Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis might have the NFL on his mind.

Lewis joined the Arizona State Sun Devils as a special advisor this week, making it his first job since he tried his hand at calling Alliance of American Football games.

But some have started to wonder if the latest gig is Lewis positioning himself to get back into the NFL.

Charles Robinson of Yahoo suggested the idea: “Speaking with sources close to Marvin Lewis, there’s a strong belief his advisor role with Arizona State football is Lewis keeping a toe in coaching as he considers pursuing #NFL horizons in 2020. Lewis was 131-122-3 with the #Bengals (most wins in franchise history, FWIW).”

Call it an interesting idea. The AAF job certainly wasn’t a spot likely to let him jump back into the NFL. The Sun Devils job seems more like linking up with friend Herm Edwards and being close to his family in Arizona.

But who knows? Lewis might have a hard time with an NFL comeback though. He’s qualified, of course, but the trend right now is with younger offensive-minded coaches. Until the trend swings back toward defensive coaches to counteract the widespread explosive offenses, Lewis might have to bide his time.

He’s picked a comfortable place to do so if he’s truly intent on eventually getting back into the NFL.
