Covid meant many New Year events, including London’s annual fireworks display were cancelled last year. But as we welcome 2022, some traditions look set to return.
While this year has been just as difficult as 2020 due to continuing coronavirus concerns, things really took a turn for the worse over the past month with the emergence of the Omicron variant.
With the super mutant Covid strain spreading across the UK, many New Year plans were thrown into limbo – and sadly some of them have been cancelled for a second year in a row.
However, there might be some good news for those who look forward to seeing the stunning fireworks display in London at the end of every year.
Will there be any firework displays in London on New Year’s Eve?
In a happy surprise for the public, London's famous riverside display will return to ring in 2022.
The event, which was originally cancelled, is actually going ahead following announcements from City Hall today.
The extravaganza has been kept hush-hush as officials did not want to cause overcrowding in the capital's centre.
Normally, thousands of people gather around Victoria Embankment to see a spectacular display with fireworks, lights and music.
This year, revellers are being urged to enjoy the spectacle from home, as the display will be shown on TV.
It is now understood that the show will involve pyrotechnics and a live performances for the first time ever.
Some other smaller displays will also be taking place across London.
Big Ben will finally bong again this New Year, after years of restoration.
Not only will Christmas lights, festive markets and ice rinks be open until late for the celebration, but the return of nightclubs means you can dance your way into 2022.
What New Year events have been cancelled this year?
In other parts of the nation where restrictions have been tightened, several New Year's Eve events have been cancelled.
For instance, in Scotland, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations have been cancelled – with the usual outdoor street party, concerts, and fireworks no longer going ahead.
The Loony Dook, which is a morning dip in a river, has also been cancelled.
However, in Wales, celebrations seem likely to go ahead, with Cardiff Depot making a return with cocktails, street food, and fireworks accompanied by showband SALUT. But you do need to show proof of vaccination or a negative lateral flow test to enjoy these festivities.
Northern Ireland typically rings the New Year in with events at Ballygally and Killeavy castles, and fireworks at Fratelli in Belfast.
Given the country's current restrictions including a ban on nightclubs and other indoor events, there is no confirmation for now that these events will be going ahead.
