Unless you live under a rock, you have heard that the San Francisco 49ers have pulled the trigger on one of the biggest blockbuster trades of the off-season. The Niners have sent their first-rounder, a third-rounder, and their first-round selections in 2022 and 2023 to the Miami Dolphins for the number three overall selection in the 2021 draft.
Typically when teams move up in the first round it is to select a quarterback and there are a few that could fall into their lap. After Trevor Lawrence goes off the board, either BYU’s Zack Wilson, Alabama’s Mac Jones, or Ohio State stud Justin Fields will be there. The biggest question and controversy that remains, is which gunslinger Kyle Shanahan and the front office in San Francisco prefers?
It appears that question may have already been answered as Justin Fields was seen working out at the QB Collective, a program that has deep ties with San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan. Photos of the sessions have been released showing Fields working with Shanahan. It is also worth noting that one of the coaches at the QB Collective has mentioned that 49ers will not select Mac Jones.
It is no secret that Fields is an elite prospect and has arguably a higher ceiling than anyone not named Trevor Lawrence. The Niners are not that far removed from a Super Bowl appearance and a young talented dual-threat talent like Fields could put that franchise over the top.

Of course, this is all about the 2021 NFL draft, and we’ve been surprised before, but I don’t think it’s any accident that the 49ers made the trade during BYU QB Zach Wilson’s pro day. Once they saw him look fantastic, San Francisco felt pretty good that it would have someone to pick either way at No. 3. But Fields looks like the play here.
