Is just being competitive good enough for Steelers fans?

Every NFL fan base has a different perspective on what it means to be successful. If you are a Cleveland Browns fan you view what a successful season is very different than most Pittsburgh Steelers fan does. But what we’ve seen over the last nine seasons is a decline in production and for many Steelers fans, lowered expectations.

Understand, this is not about head coach Mike Tomlin. This is an open letter to Steeler Nation. There was a time when Steelers fans were practically incorrigible when it came to their team’s success. It was the Super Bowl or nothing every single season.

But with two straight seasons without the playoffs and only three playoff wins in nine seasons, fans seem to have mellowed on the idea of Pittsburgh being a Super Bowl contender and are ok with them just fielding a competitive team.

With the return of Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers look like a playoff team. But in a crowded AFC, should Steelers fans expect a deep playoff run, or are you going to be happy with them just fielding a competitive team that isn’t realistically going to compete for a Super Bowl title? Or should Steeler Nation hold this team to a higher level and expect the Steelers to win every week regardless of the circumstances?

Let us know in the comments what you consider a successful season at this point.
