Aug. 13--UCLA has a quarterback competition in training camp this summer -- people might have heard -- and coaches expected it to go on for a little while.
But there may be some signs pointing to how it all could play out.
For starters, receiver Jordan Lasley switched his jersey number from No. 3 to No. 2 this season. Freshman quarterback Josh Rosen wears No. 3, and players with the same number can't be on the field at the same time.
This could be attributed to being prepared in the event Rosen beats out junior Jerry Neuheisel for the job.
Meanwhile, receiver Jordan Payton has a VIP roommate during camp -- Rosen -- but Payton said no one should read too much into the roomies thing.
"I guess it was just random selection," he said.
The Bruins' best receiver, who also happens to be one of the team's most mature individuals, was matched with the freshman. Sure, it was just one of those coincidences.
Meanwhile, the Bruins worked on their short passing game Wednesday.
Neuheisel completed eight of 17 passes, tossing one touchdown, while running the first-team offense. He also had a pass deflected by linebacker Myles Jack, which was intercepted by Keisean Lucier-South.
Rosen completed 10 of 19 passes while working mostly with the second-team offense, which has an inexperienced line. He completed five of five passes while with the first team.
