Is it time for a Neville Bonner Place in Canberra?

Fenner MP Andrew Leigh this week spoke in Parliament in favour of an idea that Mall Road West in Parkes in the Paliamentary Triangle be renamed Neville Bonner Place, in honour of the groundbreaking Liberal senator.

Senator Bonner was the first Aboriginal person elected to Parliament, on June 11, 1971.

The idea was put to Dr Leigh by Anna Howe, who takes regular walks through the area and thought it would be "one step on the path to reconciliation".

Dr Leigh put Ms Howe's "excellent proposal" to the House of Reps on Wednesday.

"It would be apt to do so, given that next week marks 50 years since Neville Bonner was elected to the parliament," he told the chamber.

"There were plenty of 'hear hear' calls from the Liberals in the chamber, suggesting it might well get bipartisan support," Dr Leigh said afterwards.

Ms Howe said a statue of Bonner might also be appropriate.
