Is it safe to travel to Turkey after Foreign Office issues urgent warning to British tourists?

British holidaymakers planning a trip to Turkey have been issued with an urgent warning from the Foreign Office.

Last year, Brits headed to the country over 2.3 million times.

But people are now being advised against all travel to parts of the country, amid rising tension from terrorist groups.

While most of these visits to the country are trouble-free, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has instructed British tourists to avoid all areas within 10km of the Syrian border, reports My London.

Officials advised all but essential trips to Sirnak, Kilis, and Hatay provinces as well as the provinces of Diyarbakir, Tunceli and Hakkari.

FCO officials said that "terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks" in the country.

Tourists should "be vigilant", especially in crowded places after terrorist attacks in the south and east of the country, including Ankara and Istanbul.

The FCO said: "Terrorist groups, including Kurdish groups, Daesh (formerly referred to as ISIL) and far left organisations, continue to plan and carry out attacks. Further attacks could be indiscriminate.

"While there is a potential that citizens from western countries may be targets or caught up in attacks, particularly in the major cities, attacks are most likely to target the Turkish state, civilians and demonstrations."

A previous warning put in place during the country's Mayoral elections has now been withdrawn.
