Is it safe to travel to Gran Canaria? Foreign Office issues advice following forest fires

Holidaymakers heading to Gran Canaria this summer are being advised to take care after wildfires broke out on the island.

Around 9,000 people in the North West of the island have been evacuated due to an ongoing forest fire which started on Saturday.

With temperatures reaching 40C in Spain in the summer months, there is an increased risk of forest fires.

Anyone travelling to Gran Canaria has been urged to check the latest updates from local authorities.

The Foreign Office advised those travelling to the area to be aware of the causes of a wildfire.

A spokesman said: "Forest fires occur frequently in Spain during the summer months.

“Make sure cigarette ends are properly extinguished, do not light barbeques and do not leave empty bottles behind.”

Causing forest fires in Spain is a criminal offence whether it be deliberate or not.

There are also strict regulations with outdoor barbeques in picnic areas during the summer.

If you are planning to visit Gran Canaria, check the latest updates and information on Twitter via @112canaries.

To report any forest fires to emergency services call 112.
